Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens also known as Queen Latifah is an American artist and rapper. Queen Latifah's performance in the fields of music, film and television has been recognized with the Golden Globe award two Screen Actors Guild Awards two Image Awards a Grammy Award Six additional Grammy nominations an Emmy Award nomination and an Academy Award nomination. Queen Latifah was born in Newark, NJ. The daughter is Rita Owens, Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. Latifah's parents separated when she was just 10 years old. Latifah lived in the Baptist faith and attended Catholic school at Newark New Jersey. At the age of 8, her cousin gave her stage names Latifah which translates to tender and gentle in Arabic. Latifah is an extremely tall girl of 5'10 inches who played on the high school basketball squad. She sang "Home" from The Wiz in a performance in her high school. Latifah started beatboxing in the women's fresh rap group. Latifah was part of Flavor Unit - a group of rappers who united around the producer DJ Mark the 45 king. Mark James aka the 45 King, recorded a version of Queen Latifah's Princess of the Posse rap. The recording was given to Yo! MTV Raps the Fab Five Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music who was working for Latifah at the time, was impressed by her song. The song was released in 1988. Wrath of My Madness as the first single by Latifah.
